The Santos Reinvented

2018 is off to an incredible start and for watch enthusiasts like me it honestly feels like a second Christmas!

The one piece I have really fallen for is the new Santos de Cartier. At first site it’s almost like a cross between the Galbee and the 100 in reality it is so much more.

A few of my own personal issues with the Galbee was that it was a little outdated in finishing. The satin-brushed and mirror finishing although added definition also made it appear old-fashioned. The second is that it’s quartz. Understandably quartz is used to maintain the ultimate case size and for near perfect accuracy. The swiss manufacturers are not renowned for this the time and the expertise necessary for the automatic movement far outweighs the benefits of quartz.

On the other hand the Santos 100 ticks the Automatic box. A movement which does require a high level of skill and expertise yet it’s not an in house Cartier movement. Then the case whilst I like the sporty over sized look it can look too large on some wrists.

The Santos de Cartier 2018 however is just what we have been waiting for. The heart of the watch is all Cartier with the 1847MC calibre. As I’m sure you are aware Cartier are recognised as jewellers, ‘the jeweller of Kings’ this in my opinion does not mean they should be written off as watchmakers! To become all in house takes a certain amount of time. I think over the next few years we will see a major overhaul for Cartier movements just like the Santos.

The 2018 piece is not only a great piece of horology, it is also full of choice. On purchase it comes with a detachable bracelet and a leather strap. Ultimately suitable to wear to any occasion especially with Cartier’s vast strap choices!

Many positives for this piece and I really do think girl or guy it has got to be on the list!

What do you think?
